David Humphreys Bio

Much like his music, David Humphreys is a mix of whimsical charm and sophisticated elegance. The son of a special agent for the FBI and a painter, David’s love of music began with a snare drum he received for his 8th birthday. “My parents taught me that music is a good hobby,” he remembers, “but it’s not something you do to make a living. I spend my life trying to prove that teaching wrong.”

It was during his boarding school years at St. Paul’s in Concord, New Hampshire, when David began to realize his talent and his passion. Voted the “Most Interested in Music” by his classmates, David earned a spot in a folk music band, which went on a nationwide tour of Episcopal churches.

David studied English at Harvard, but he soon left the school for Nashville with just a drum set and a dream. The drums were quickly put to use. As a freelance musician, David first toured with Digger Revell of Sydney, Australia, and then Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show, Slim Whitman, Kathy Mattea and Janie Fricke. He’s also recorded with Grammy award winning artists Petula Clark and Take 6, as well as country greats Garth Brooks, Marty Stuart, Carl Perkins, Alabama and Anne Murray.

But David didn’t fulfill his dream until he followed in the footsteps of such musical greats as Glenn Miller, Lester Lanin and Chick Webb, founding the David Humphreys Orchestra in 1989. Collecting only the most experienced professionals, David created a devoted group of spectacularly talented musicians who share his party philosophy: “Party unto others, as you would party unto yourselves!”

David's orchestra is the only society band that has its own collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians. So unlike most bands, David's band members can contribute to their pension funds.

Beyond music, David enjoys racquetball and ice hockey. He and his wife Suze live in Nashville, Tenn., with their animals (mostly dogs).

David has also served on the executive board of Outlook Nashville. He is also past president of the Middle Tennessee chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
